What is the average pay raise for someone who switches jobs?

What % would you expect to get on top of your current salary if you change jobs? I know every situation is different, but what is the average one can expect?

What is the average pay raise for someone who switches jobs?
I think a move to another company should usually result in a 5% increase but only if you are moving from a current job and are not unemployed or between jobs. Then you go back to square one and could be handed a decrease, even if you have the same qualifications and experience.

I work in local government and our policy is 5% to lure employees (although we are grossly under market in most cases.)
Reply:It depends - in many cases now, they want to see your w-2, and will not even give you a raise, just parity - but if it's with more responsibility or a better job title, I would expect from 5 - 15% more money. When negotiating, try to go for soft dollar amounts, like more vacation time or having benefits start sooner rather than hard dollars - you're more likely to get those benefits in hand.
Reply:If you are trying to leave a bad situation, expect the company to offer you lateral to a 2% raise. If they really want you and you don't have to leave your current place of employ 5-10% seems pretty normal.

But if you are learning something new, like a new industry, expect a small pay cut in many cases.
