I heard some get jobs at the NUWC in RI, but I want an officer rank not a civillian Job.

What are good jobs for physicists in the United States Navy or Air Force?
Assuming you have (or are going to have) a 4-year degree, you have many options.

Navy: Nuclear power is the method of propulsion for almost all aircraft carriers and all submarines. Entering their program will give you excellent opportunities in working with nuclear power.

Air Force: There is a career designation called, "scientist". In this career, you do just what you studied. You do research in new weapons, propulsion, etc. platforms. I know several engineers who have gone into that, and love it.

I was a physicist (before I became the Economizing economist) going into the Air Force, and what I wanted to do was be a missileer. While it is an operational job, it got me working with nuclear weapons, and it's never a bad thing to have an advanced understanding of the weapon system you are using.

The great thing about being a physicist is that you can do just about anything in the physical sciences, so any military job would be great.
Reply:Well, it depends on what your specialty is. You can check with your local recruiters, and the service websites have a lot of info as well.
Reply:look at marine engineering... thats a popular one... also look into aviation technology... there are many options especially seeing as how in the ROTCs they stress the physical sciences a LOT... good luck with finding what you want to do... there are many options for you.
Reply:Did you already go to school? If you have not yet look into the Nuclear Officer program through the Navy. It will give you $120,000 to go to school if you join the nuke program after you graduate. If you already went to school I would still look at being a Navy Nuclear Officer, you get all the expeirence you need for employment after you leave, and losts of bonuses.
Reply:to get an officer rank, you will need to enlist in active duty status and have a college degree.

if not, then you will never be an officer. you will be a Non -Commissioned Officer without the degree going in, but you can earn degress through the military.
