How does a Mechanical Engineer obtain a security clearance to help obtain other jobs?

Jobs such as companies that have missle/rocket/contracts through the government ?

How does a Mechanical Engineer obtain a security clearance to help obtain other jobs?
You start by hiring into one of those companies without a clearance (even if they advertise for people with clearances, only), work your way up to a job that requires a clearance, and then the company will get you your necessary clearance.

Keep at it... they do hire non-cleared engineers all-the-time -- it's just cheaper for them if they can hire someone with a clearance already, so they don't have to pay for a new investigation/clearance.

Reply:You cannot get a security clearance until you need a security clearance.

So once you get a job that requires one, then the company can start the process to get you one. Once you have one and leave the job, it is deactivated but can be reactivated administratively for up to 2 years.
Reply:Yeah...you cant earn it unless you need it. sorry. and you can only earn what you need. so you cannot earn a top-secret clearance when you only need a secret clearance. If this is something that you are interested in obtaining, aim for a position in a field that would allow you to earn that clearance. Or, if you are still in school, i think the rotc sometimes helps a bit with getting those jobs. Not the program, but that you're in it. I had a friend in my Mech Eng program that wasin the AF ROTC and he got a job at a nuke plant and earned it.
